今月のギークサロンはパーソナルゲノム環境の開発・研究に取り組まれている城戸 隆氏にホストして頂きます。
米国でも既に低価格での個人向け遺伝子解析サービスが急速に広がり始めています。パーソナルゲノムをめぐる現在の研究やビジネスの動向を紹介頂いた上で、近い将来にどのような時代が到来するか・またその時に何が必要になるのかを城戸氏の研究を軸として伺います。

慶應義塾大学大学院理工学研究科計算機科学専攻にて遺伝的アルゴリズムを用いたハイブリッド探索に関する研究で博士号を取得。NTT情報通信研究所に勤務。在職中に1998年マレーシアのマルチメディアスーパーコリドー計画のもとでNTT海外R&D拠点立上げのために海外赴任。その後2002年から遺伝子解析のベンチャー企業であるHuBit Genomix社にて疾患関連解析の研究開発に従事。2006年からスタンフォード大学Genetics DepartmentのStanford Microarray Database groupにて客員研究員。現在は理研ジェネシスにてパーソナルゲノム環境の研究に取り組む。
また、丁度今月7月に城戸氏の著作が出版されました。

近い将来、1000ドル程度のコストで個人の遺伝子解析が行われ、その結果に基づくオーダーメイド医療が実現すると考えられています。米国で低コスト化の競争が開始される一方で、遺伝子解析の解釈がどう個々人に伝わるか、あるいはどう伝えるかという「情報環境と人」としての課題は取り残されています。それは新たな医学的知識を利用者の視点で正確に伝えることであり、心理的文化的宗教的背景にも関わるセンシティブな課題でもあります。前半はパーソナルゲノムをめぐる現在の研究やビジネスの動向を紹介し、後半では城戸氏のJSTさきがけ研究プロジェクトでの挑戦や取り組みについて紹介します。
